Schwarzenegger takes a "Stand" in new film, with cue from Eastwood

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Arnold Schwarzenegger, taking inspiration from his idol, Clint Eastwood, returns to the big screen on Friday in the action film "The Last Stand," his first starring role since he took a seven-year break from moviemaking to serve as California governor.

In a departure from his typical superhuman roles, Schwarzenegger plays a retired Los Angeles policeman forced to protect a tiny border town from a notorious drug kingpin. The 65-year-old former bodybuilder looks every bit his age and admits in the film feeling "old" as he takes a ribbing from some of his significantly younger deputies.

As he embarks on a movie comeback in which he will star in three films over the next 12 months, Schwarzenegger is embracing his age rather than trying to relive his glory days as an action star.

He is taking his cue from the 82-year-old Eastwood - the gun-toting former macho "Dirty Harry" star who eased into more senior roles, winning plaudits for movies like last year's "The Trouble with the Curve," and "Million Dollar Baby" in 2004, for which he was nominated for a best-actor Oscar and won for best director.

Schwarzenegger said he was inspired by Eastwood in the 1993 film "In the Line of Fire," where Eastwood's character, a Secret Service agent, is short of breath after running alongside the president's limousine.

"I thought that was so cool," Schwarzenegger told Reuters TV recently. "I remember how smart it was to acknowledge that because it took the curse off. No one was trying to say, 'Isn't he too old for this job?' That's what I tried to do in this film since (Eastwood) is a big idol of mine and I always like to learn from him."

Schwarzenegger said he felt great physically, but that reality had set in. "I'm not a 30-year-old action hero anymore," he said. "I'm now 65 years old, but I'm still doing action movies. I acknowledge that it's a different ballgame now. I'm an older guy."

In "Last Stand," Schwarzenegger said he agreed to play the part of Sheriff Ray Owens because "it was kind of a traditional Schwarzenegger action movie" with "big blow-ups, a great story, good drama, fight scenes and action from the beginning to the end."

Schwarzenegger began his transformation to an aging action star in the 2010 film "The Expendables" and its 2012 sequel where he played an aging movie star in an ensemble cast that included Sylvester Stallone and other older stars.

"I was very pleasantly surprised by the positive reaction," said Schwarzenegger, who was Republican governor of California from 2003 to 2011.

'I-DARE-YOU ATTITUDE'

Critics have mostly embraced Schwarzenegger's return with "Last Stand," despite the film's modest budget. Film critic Marshall Fine called it "shamelessly entertaining," while The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy wrote that Schwarzenegger "still conveys the old self-confident, humorous I-dare-you attitude towards his adversaries."

An older, wiser Schwarzenegger chose to play vintage roles in his other upcoming films as well. In September, he teams up again with Stallone in "The Tomb," where they play aging inmates who plot a prison escape. Next January, Schwarzenegger will star in "Ten," playing what the film's director, David Ayer, called "a broken old drug warrior."

In an interview with Reuters, Ayer said his No. 1 goal in working with Schwarzenegger was "transformation." The director said he studied every frame of Schwarzenegger's films, noting that most of the actor's filmography had "a very specific tone, almost jocular in a sense, where it is not necessarily a psychologically realistic portrayal of a man or a character."

"You look at all these performances, and the question is, have these characters been treated as something he can transform himself?" Ayer said. "I probably asked him to do things he wasn't asked before. I knew I could take him someplace new. Some of these scenes required real, heavy lifting."

In the end, Ayer believes moviegoers will be "blindsided" by what they see of Schwarzenegger on screen.

Yet even as Schwarzenegger attempts to widen his range as an actor, he is not leaving behind the genre films that made him famous.

That means going back to some of his popular franchises of the past, including a new "Conan the Barbarian" film that is expected to go into production later this year and a sequel to the 1988 action comedy "Twins" to be called "Triplets."

"It's important I pick projects that the fans, that the audiences like to see," he said.

He already has another big fan in his friend Stallone, who talked him into acting in the two "Expendables" films.

"What is the definition of a star? Someone who people will wait three hours in the rain to see," Stallone said. "And people still have their umbrellas out for him."

Garnett, Rondo to start in NBA All-Star Game

For one night, the bitter rivals will be transformed into members of the same starting lineup.

Kevin Garnett, who was involved in a testy incident with Carmelo Anthony on Jan. 7, will be alongside the New York Knicks forward in the Eastern Conference frontcourt.

Rajon Rondo, who has a history with Dwyane Wade, will line up next to the Miami Heat guard in the backcourt.

The pair of Celtics learned on Thursday night they are headed to Houston for the 62nd NBA All-Star Game on Feb. 17 after being voted onto the team as starters.

Garnett, who was chosen for the 15th time, finished third behind LeBron James and Anthony in the frontcourt while Rondo, a first-time starter making his fourth trip to the All-Star Game, was the second-leading vote-getter behind Wade at the guard position.

After not being selected last season, the 36-year-old Garnett is returning to the league?s mid-winter showcase event as he received 553,222 votes, beating out Chris Bosh of the Heat by 25,208 votes.

Garnett and Anthony did a lot of trash talking during the Celtics? visit to Madison Square Garden earlier this month and both received technical fouls. When the game was over, Anthony went to the Celtics? locker room and later the team bus looking for Garnett.

Anthony received a one-game suspension from the NBA. Garnett said he would have no problem with Anthony or any other adversary as an all-star teammate.

?You have time to plan for it ? and when you come there, it?s to come together as a conference and actually have guys into it, enjoy it,?? said Garnett., whose Celtics host the Chicago Bulls tonight. ?It takes a back seat to all the competitive juices.

?Obviously, after the game, you kind of turn it back on. But other than that, you set aside all the things that go on during the 82 (games in the regular season) and come in and try to enjoy each other for three or four days.??

Rondo was called for a flagrant foul on Wade during the closing minutes of the Heat?s opening-night win over the Celtics on Oct. 30.

Wade drove past Rondo and was headed to the basket when he was grabbed around the neck by the point guard. Wade later called it a ?punk play.??

During the 2011 playoffs, Rondo suffered a dislocated elbow when he was sent to the floor by Wade.

Asked before practice on Thursday afternoon if he would socialize with Eastern Conference teammates like Wade or Anthony, Rondo said, ?Why would I?

?I don?t do much socializing. If I make it, I hope one of my home boys makes it, Josh Smith. If he makes it and KG makes it, we?ll all (get together). I don?t try to be friends with anyone outside my team.??

Rondo, who leads the NBA in assists and received the seventh-highest vote total in the league with 924,180, was aided in his starting berth by the absence of Derrick Rose on the ballot this season. The Bulls guard has not played after injuring a knee during the playoffs last spring.

Jared Sullinger should be joining Rondo and Garnett in Houston as he will likely be chosen to play in the Rising Stars Challenge that consists of rookies and second-year players.

Paul Pierce, who has been selected to the All-Star team in 10 of the last 11 years, will learn next Thursday if he will be going as a reserve. Pierce finished sixth in the frontcourt behind James, Anthony, Garnett, Bosh and Tyson Chandler.

The starters for the Western Conference will be Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard of the Lakers, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin of the Clippers and Kevin Durant of the Thunder.

e Customer Reviews Part of Your Marketing Strategy in 2013 | Small ...

make customer reviews part of your marketing Strategy in 2013

Richard McMunn is a leading career and recruitment specialist and founder of How2become.

2013 promises to be a competitive year for businesses, especially when people are looking hard at the money they spend on goods and services. Having a good business marketing strategy is essential when it comes to gaining and retaining customers, and one area that is sometimes overlooked, is including customer reviews as part of that strategy.

Many consumers are searching for customer reviews before they commit to buy a product or a service, and they like to read them from a variety of sources. Whether a business is a manufacturer, a retailer or a service provider, good customer reviews can be an excellent way of drawing in additional customers. A genuine, positive customer review has a weight that other marketing efforts simply cannot match, and shows that other people in their position consider their money to have been well spent.

Before focusing on customer reviews though, it is essential to have the basics in place. The main factors here are an honest appraisal of the goods or services that are being provided. Are they good quality? Good value for money? Is the customer service of the highest standard? Are problems dealt with easily and efficiently? Once the answer to these questions is yes, you can focus on gaining customer reviews in places that will do the most good.

For retailers who sell through third parties such as Amazon or eBay, customer reviews have been a part of life for a long time. People who buy through these sites are encouraged to leave a review of their experience as a part of the buying experience. There are, however, a large number of other sites where reviews of products and services can be made, including price comparison sites and Google itself.

Asking customers to leave a review is sometimes a tricky subject. No one wants to appear pushy, as the review left may be the opposite of what you want! One idea is to follow up each sale with an email thanking a customer for their business, and then perhaps including a link to a website where a review can be left. If a customer leaves a review there, it has many benefits beyond just the review itself. It also means that the email is a genuine one and that the customer has become connected. Placing this email address in a newsletter database can be one way of ensuring further business from them. You might even want to offer them a discount coupon off their next purchase.

The benefits of customer reviews as part of a business marketing strategy do not end there, though. Once a positive review is online, the full force of the internet in the form of social media can be brought into play, and the review can be tweeted and placed on Facebook in order to gain more exposure. Some people have even used reviews as part of a YouTube campaign, and lifting segments of positive reviews and placing them in adverts has been common place for years.

Using customer reviews as part of a business marketing strategy makes a great deal of sense and is only limited by the inventiveness with which it is applied. It can be used as an opportunity not only to promote a business, but also as a way of gaining genuine customer feedback; thus helping companies to streamline and improve their goods and services on offer.

'Superomniphobic' material shrugs off oil, blood, acid and more

1 day

Even the nicest water-resistant materials, from synthetics to waxed canvas, can be ruined by certain liquids?that soak right in while rain and coffee?roll off. Scientists at the University of Michigan have created a surface that repels not just everyday fluids but exotic and dangerous ones.

The "superomniphobic" material works by reducing the amount of surface that's exposed to any given liquid it encounters, meaning that that liquid's surface tension (which keeps its together in a droplet or stream) remains intact.

A series of short videos accompanies the?article in the Journal of the?American Chemical Society, demonstrating the various ways in which liquid refuses to interact with the superomniphobic surface. Droplets bounce and roll across the surface, streams richochet off, and hydrochloric acid has no corrosive effect. Even "non-Newtonian" fluids like blood and shampoo, famously difficult to stop from soaking and staining, have been tamed.

Anish Tuteja, lead researcher on the project, and his colleagues have been working on similar omniphobic surfaces?for over five years, but this one is the best by far, he told NBC News.

"On the first generations, the droplets were leaving something behind," he said ? a problem around hazardous materials that could cause trouble later by evaporating or falling off. Not any more.

Yet it can't be totally impermeable. "It's a very, very porous coating ? porous to anything that's gas-based, but not to anything liquid." That means ordinary air and water vapor can pass through ? helpful when you don't want your clothing to stifle you.

The researchers achieved this balance by allowing much of the coating to be air ? in fact, between 95 and 98 percent of its?surface area. Up close, it appears like a loosely woven mat. Look closer, and the fibers begin to appear spiky.

When a droplet of water comes into contact with the surface, it's basically balanced on the tips of those spikes, with vast spaces of air in between. They don't overcome?the liquid's?surface tension, meaning the droplet keeps its shape and bounces or rolls along.

The spaces are big enough to allow air to breathe through, but small enough that neither oil, water, or acid will have enough contact to soak through. It's like a tennis ball on a net ? the net is light enough to see through, but the ball will bounce right off. If the spaces were much bigger, the ball would go through, and if they were much smaller, you wouldn't be able to see.

The work's not done, Tuteja said. Although he has "three or four" parties?interested in this type of material, not least of which is the military (which partially funded the research), there are still improvements to be made.?

"We definitely need to improve the mechanical durability, increasing the number of washing cycles, and so on," he said. A rather pedestrian concern for a leader in the field, but it's what needs to be done to get the superomniphobic material out of the lab and onto our coats and shoes.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBCNews Digital. His personal website is?coldewey.cc.

print24 Online on Demand (Hendon, London, by henners21)

Review of print24 Online on Demand from 16 January 2013

Thought I would try this printing company after finding themonline. First thing that attracted me was their prices, they are cheaper than any other company I found for the product I needed - double sided full colour flyers, a second reason was the fact that delivery was included in the price. I chose the right company, the whole experience from start to finish was right. The online ordering process was easy to use -?straightforward - and there were further savings if you upgraded your product, for example expedited delivery for less. I uploaded the files after I had paid and then received a series of emails confirming the order, confirming receipt of the data, approving the workability of the files (the files must be in CMYK mode) and then finally?a?tracking number to follow the progress of the delivery.?I took a chance with this company wihout any referrals unsure as to what I was going to receive in terms of quality, they are a litho printing company I figured the print would be good. I received the goods 4 DAYS before I was supposed to, the print job is excellent and the paper feels expensive; basically the things that are important in translating interest into sales.????

Collapse of apartment building in Egypt kills 23

CAIRO (AP) ? An eight-story apartment building collapsed Wednesday in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, killing at least 23 people in the second deadly accident to hit the country in as many days, according to police and health officials.

Senior Health Ministry official Mohammed el-Sharqawy said 11 people also were injured and that rescue teams were searching for survivors under the rubble. Military police from a nearby naval base cordoned off the area to help the rescue operation.

The collapse came a day after 19 police conscripts were killed when the last car of the train they were riding in jumped the tracks and smashed into another train just outside Cairo.

It was not immediately clear what caused the building to collapse in a poor district of the Mediterranean port city, but violations of building specifications have been blamed for similar accidents in the past. The governor of Alexandria, Mohammed Abbas Atta, told Egypt's official news agency that the building was constructed without a permit.

Abul Ezz el-Hariri, an opposition lawmaker from Alexandria, warned that hundreds of buildings in the city face the same fate, but that lax law enforcement following the ouster two years ago of Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak means that no action is being taken against building violations.

Residents complain that landowners in farmland on the city's outskirts have taken advantage of the chaos and near lawlessness that followed the former president's overthrow and illegally sold their land to developers who built shoddy apartment blocks.

Similar violations have taken place across much of the country. Pointing to the magnitude of the problem, Housing Minister Tareq Wafeeq told reporters that a total of 318,000 illegal constructions went up in 23 of Egypt's 27 provinces between 2009 and 2012.

Alexandria's security chief, police Maj-Gen Abdel-Mawgood Lutfi, said the building was constructed five years ago and had 24 apartments.

That the building collapsed early in the day meant that most tenants were home. Police evacuated residents of two adjacent buildings out of concern that the collapse may have caused structural damage to them.

The collapse could stoke criticism of President Mohammed Morsi administration. Critics accuse the government of failing to carry out reforms and overhaul the nation's deteriorating public services.

Two months ago, 50 children died when a train rammed into their school bus in southern Egypt. That tragedy also sparked a storm of criticism of Morsi, who took office in June.

The latest train wreck led to protests Tuesday at railway stations in Cairo, Alexandria and a third city in the Nile Delta. The demonstrators were protesting what they said was official negligence in maintaining and upgrading the country's aging rail network.

Morsi's government has blamed Tuesday's train accident on what officials say is nearly 30 years of corruption and misrule under Mubarak. Transport Minister Hatem Abdel-Lateef told another news conference that overhauling the country's railways would cost 15 billion Egyptian pounds ($2.3 billion), a hefty sum for nation reeling from two years of political and economic turmoil.

The news conferences by the two Cabinet ministers appeared to be an effort by Morsi's government to take the initiative in the face of scathing criticism from the independent media and opposition parties.

Late Wednesday, Morsi's administration sought to defuse the mounting criticism, declaring its solidarity with the victims of the train wreck and the building collapse. Spokesman Yasser Ali said the presidency offered its condolences to the victims' families and pledged to ensure that they and the survivors received the best available care.

Morsi, the nation's first democratically elected president, has struggled since taking office in June to address a host of major problems that include an ailing economy, tenuous security, a slumping tourism industry and seemingly endless political turmoil.

'Girls' star to Howard Stern: 'I'm not that fat!'

By Us Weekly

Reuters / Getty Images file

Lena Dunham called in to Howard Stern's show Wednesday to address his comments about her and her show "Girls."

Typically brash Howard Stern surprised both fans and critics alike by issuing a public apology to Lena Dunham on his radio show Monday, Jan. 14, so the "Girls" creator did what any gracious Hollywood starlet would do: She called in.

The 26-year-old director/actress/writer dropped a line during Stern's SiriusXM Radio show Wednesday, Jan. 16, to reassure Stern that his comments were water under the bridge -- and call him out on one comment in particular.?

Photos from Us: 12 breakout stars of 2012?

"I don't even know where to begin with all of this," an apologetic Stern began. "The reason I felt so awful was because when Perez Hilton wrote his article, he told half the story. ...I started to compare you to Woody Allen ... the whole thing came together for me.??

The shock jock, 59, continued with a declaration: "I guess I just wanted to tell you I love you and I think you're terrific."?

On Monday, Jan. 7, Stern caused an angry buzz online after he slammed both Dunham and her hit HBO show "Girls."?

Photos from Us: Funniest female stars in Hollywood?

"It's a little fat girl who kinda looks like Jonah Hill and she keeps taking her clothes off and it kind of feels like rape. She seems -- it's like -- I don't want to see that," he scoffed at the time.?

Dunham admitted Wednesday that she first learned of his cruel comments after castmate Jemima Kirke, who is a huge fan of Stern's show, tipped her off that the radio host was comparing her to the "Superbad" actor.?

"I thought that was a good line, actually," Stern chuckled, trying to make light of the situation.?

Dunham responded gamely, but made sure to still get her point across.?

"I'm not that fat, Howard," she said. "I don't mean to take major issue with you about this. I'm not super thin, but I'm thin for, like, Detroit."?

Stern agreed, explaining that he just meant that she often played up the "fat angle" on the show.?

"You're not obese or anything," he allowed.?

"Thank you. Another thing for my gravestone," Dunham laughed, referring to comments she made on the "Late Show"?last Thursday, Jan. 10. "Howard Stern says, 'You're not obese or anything.'"?

Investment Mistakes to Watch For?at Different Stages of Life

As an investor, how can you avoid making mistakes? It?s not always easy, because investing can be full of potential pitfalls. But if you know what the most common mistakes are at different stages of an investor?s life, you may have a better chance of avoiding these costly errors.

Let?s take a look at some investment mistakes you?ll want to avoid when you?re young, when you?re in mid-career, when you?re nearing retirement and when you?ve just retired.

When you?re young ? Mistake: Investing too conservatively (or not at all) ? If you?re just entering the working world, you may not have a lot of money with which to invest. But don?t wait until your income grows ? putting away even a small amount each month can prove quite helpful. Additionally, don?t make the mistake of investing primarily in short-term vehicles that may preserve your principal but offer little in the way of growth potential. Instead, position your portfolio for growth. Of course, stock prices will always fluctuate, but you potentially have decades to overcome these short-term declines. Since this money is for retirement, your focus should be on the long term ? and it?s impossible to reach long-term goals with short-term, highly conservative investments.

When you?re in mid-career ? Mistake: Putting insufficient funds into your retirement accounts ? At this stage of your life, your earning power may well have increased substantially. As a result, you should have more money available to invest for the future ? specifically, you may now be able to ?max out? on your IRA and still boost your contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as your 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b). These retirement accounts offer tax advantages that you may not receive in ordinary savings and investment accounts. Try to put more money into these retirement accounts every time your salary goes up.

When you?re nearing retirement ? Mistake: Not having balance in your investment portfolio ? When they?re within just a few years of retirement, some people may go to extremes, either investing too aggressively to try to make up for lost time or too conservatively in an attempt to avoid potential declines. Both these strategies could be risky. So as you near retirement, seek to balance your portfolio. This could mean shifting some of your investment dollars into fixed-income vehicles to provide for your current income needs while still owning stocks that provide the growth potential to help keep up with inflation in your retirement years.

When you?ve just retired ? Mistake: Failing to determine an appropriate withdrawal rate ? Upon reaching retirement, you will need to carefully manage the money you?ve accumulated in your IRA, 401(k) and all other investment accounts. Obviously, your chief concern is outliving your money, so you?ll need to determine how much you can withdraw each year. To arrive at this figure, take into account your current age, your projected longevity, the amount of money you?ve saved and the estimated rate of return you?re getting from your investments. This type of calculation is complex, so you may want to consult with a financial professional.

By avoiding these errors, you can help ensure that, at each stage of your life, you?re doing what you can to keep making progress toward your financial goals.

We've seen the headunit specs so we thought we'd give you a pic tour of the newest devices as well as a short clip of us sitting in the custom Lexus CT 200h playing with its ridiculous system. The centerpiece of the system is the AVH-X8500BHS receiver (above) and a custom Steampunk-inspired sub enclosure loaded with six PRS D800 amps. End result? hair-moving, skin-creeping bass and volume. We're digging seeing all the AppRadio expansion to Pioneers's line and can only hope we see prices drop -- and even become pack-ins -- for the now rather expensive connectivity cables.

Typical Day at Global Business Management | EHOVE Blog

YouTube Preview Image

A typical day in Global Business Management at EHOVE varies. Recently we have been practicing for contests for BPA in January at Ashland University. Our class contest is parliamentary procedure. To be successful it will take hard work and dedication, but I believe we can do this. We are all friends and in a way like a family having fun, so it helps practicing be more excitable. On a regular day, we will have various assignments that need to be done with the due date beside it. Occasionally we have notes, quizzes, tests or reflections and field trips.

Stephen Lendman: Washington Post Supports Israeli Settlements

Stephen Lendman: Washington Post Supports Israeli SettlementsPost editors are contemptuous of fundamental human rights. They spurn democratic values. They consider rule of law principles quaint and out-of-date. Wealth, power, privilege, and dominance alone matter.

When America goes to war or plans one, they march supportively in lockstep. They ignore the worst of imperial crimes. They endorse Israeli occupation harshness.

Jewish rights alone matter, they believe. Settlement construction is legitimate, they suggest. It?s no obstacle to peace, they claim. Further construction won?t prevent a two-state solution.

Instead of telling readers what?s important to know, they defile responsible journalism. They turn truth on its head. They support wrong over right.

They believe might is right. They endorse Jewish supremacy and specialness. They?re comfortable with belligerence, persecution and land theft.

Israel has a divine right to settlements, they suggest. On January 1, their?editorial?headlined ?Overheated rhetoric on Israeli settlements,? saying:

The reaction to recent settlement construction plans is ?counterproductive? and overheated. It ?reinforces two mistaken but widely held notions: that the settlements are the principle obstacle to (peace), and that further construction will make a Palestinian state impossible.?

Fact check

On November 15, 1988, Palestine achieved statehood. Most UN Member States recognize it.

Israel spurns peace. Netanyahu calls negotiating it ?a waste of time.? Decades of good faith Palestinian initiatives were spurned.

Conflict resolution is impossible without a reliable partner. Palestinians never had one. They don?t now. Post editors understand. Instead of explaining, they conceal what what readers need to know.

They compound bad commentary with lies. Settlement policy changed after Oslo, they claim.

?Mr. Netanyahu?s government, like several before it, has limited building almost entirely to areas that both sides expect Israel to annex through territorial swaps in an eventual settlement.?

Fact check

Diana Buttu?spent six years as Palestine?s legal advisor. She ?attended countless negotiations sessions.? She ?examined scores of proposals.? She ?devised numerous counterproposals.?

She learned the futility of negotiating with Israel. It demands. It yields nothing. It imposes its will forcefully. Official policy is do ?things our way or else.

Oslo reflected betrayal. Rather than withdrawing to pre-1967 borders and ?removing all illegal Israeli settlements, Israeli leaders decided to colonize more and annex more Palestinian territory.?

?Every Israeli proposal?.sought to accommodate? lawless behavior.

Two-state solution supporters ?evoke the (notion) of ?land swaps.? In effect they?re saying, ?The larcenist has succeeded. Let?s respond to his bad behavior on his terms.?

Conflict resolution is more distant today than 20 years ago.

Settler population ?tripled from 200,000 in 1993 to almost 600,000? in February 2012. Currently it?s greater. It?s growing exponentially. It?s on stolen Palestinian land.

Their resources are stolen in the process. Palestinian rights are entirely spurned. Israel?s all take and no give.

Buttu was involved in Oslo negotiations. Israel refused to discuss Jerusalem, the right of return, settlement expansions, borders, water rights, Palestinian self-determination, and other final status issues.

They?re still not discussed. Without resolving them, ?no solution, one or two-states, will succeed.?

Palestinians and Israelis live on the same land. Their populations are roughly equal. Israelis are heading for minority status. Jimmy Carter, Desmond Tutu, and others call Israeli policy apartheid.

Conflict resolution is impossible. Israeli recognition of Palestinian self-determination ?remains a mirage.? Both sides ?don?t have another twenty years to waste.?

Post editors suppress what readers need to know. They want Palestinians to resolve settlement issues ?at the negotiating table.? Saying so ignores reality. Israel doesn?t negotiate. It demands.

Increased settlement construction won?t prevent a two-state solution, Post editors claim.

The only viable resolution is one state comprised of Israel and the Territories. Nothing else will work.

A single state for Jews and Palestinians in theory at least resolves most intractable issues.

The alternative assures occupation, continued conflict, land theft, dispossessions, inequality, a permanent non-Jewish underclass, instability, and avoidance of within reach justice.

Israel wants occupation legitimacy and permanence. Palestinians are entitled to sovereign freedom. They deserve world support.

Their rights matter as much as Jewish ones. International law principles are inviolable. They demand ending decades of occupation, colonization and apartheid.

They require treating Arabs and Jews equally. Resolving decades of conflict depends on doing the right thing. There?s no other way.

?Netanyahu?s (E1) zoning approval is hardly a ?fatal blow? as some claim,? say Post editors.

?The exaggerated rhetoric (pressures) Abbas to make a ?freeze? (conditional) for peace talks.?

Expect him to drop it altogether. Doing so will add greater betrayal to his resume. Post editors urge it.

?If Security Council members are really interested in progress toward Palestinian statehood, they will press Abbas to stop using settlements as an excuse for intransigence ? and cool their own overheated rhetoric.?

Post editors reflect the worst of media scoundrels. They support wrong over right. They ignore inviolable international law. Under the Constitution?s Supremacy Clause, it?s US law.

Post editors understand. Why don?t they explain? International law is explicit.

Fourth Geneva?s Article 49 states, ?The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.?

In July 2004, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled:

?Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, are illegal and an obstacle to peace and to economic and social development.?

?They?ve ?been established in breach of international law? on sovereign Palestinian territory.

Home demolitions, land theft, dispossessions, and settlement construction continue unabated. Post editors support what they should condemn.

Israel wants Green Line partitioning ended. Separation Wall land theft will annex 12% of Palestine when completed.

Jordan Valley territory is vitally important for Palestinians. It has political, cultural, economic, agricultural, and geographic value. It?s too valuable to sacrifice.

Israel also wants it declared a strategic security asset. It?s one-fourth of West Bank land. Occupation harshness shrunk areas accessible to Palestinians to 6%. Israel wants it entirely Judaized.

Likud and likeminded hardliners want Area C, East Jerusalem, all settlements, and planned ones annexed.

Likud?s platform leaves no ambiguity. Its position on settlements is clear, saying:

?The Jewish communities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza (all Occupied Palestine) are the realization of Zionist values. Settlement of the land is a clear expression of the unassailable right of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel and constitutes an important asset in the defense of the vital interests of the State of Israel.?

?The Likud will continue to strengthen and develop these communities and will prevent their uprooting.?

Oslo became cover to steal West Bank land. Israel wants all valued parts. Netanyahu and previous leaders want Palestinians isolated on worthless scrubland.

They want them deprived of all rights. They want them ruthlessly persecuted and exploited. Abbas supports their agenda. Disingenuous rhetoric belies his complicity.

Palestinians are isolated on their own. Governments able to help do nothing. Media scoundrels suppress what?s going on. Israel takes full advantage. It?s been that way for decades. Hoped for light at the end of the tunnel remains invisible.
